Woolworth’s Lunch Counter

We had some patty melts tonight….and Jenny asked me when the last time I had one of these sandwiches was.

I told her that it might have been at a Woolworth’s lunch counter.

That was a while back, though.

You don’t see many Woolworth lunch counters anymore.

I don’t think that you see any Woolworth’s stores at all anymore.

I wasn’t sitting in or anything, though, when I was there.

I was just eating a sandwich.

That was some crazy stuff that happened the year I was born.

I’m glad that things aren’t quite as bad as they used to be.

I do still love patty melts, too.

step

I watched part of a surfing documentary this morning while the rest of my family slept.

Sometimes (most times), I wake up pretty early in the morning, and this morning, I watched a movie about surfing.

In the movie, the guys were out beyond the reef, and the narrator was talking about how he had to go a little bit further to find something out of the ordinary.

Further.

Of course, it’s not a real leap to think of Ken Kesey and the Further bus.

That doesn’t take a lot of creativity to think about that.

Just a restless mind.

I was thinking that it’s not much of a journey to go the extra step to something new.

No, maybe that’s wrong.

The journey can be huge…but stepping off towards a new destination is a short trip.

A short trip.

Funny.

“Funny strange….”

I don’t know what’s out there, really.

This far into the game, and I still don’t really know what’s out there.

Every day, I get in the Jeep and set out for the same circuit, different cargo, but, somehow, always the same cargo, letters and packages, messages to and from.

I don’t know if my Jeep is going to make it…but it does….usually.

Always the same.

Maybe a dog tries to bite me somedays….but it’s usually the same.

It’s only different if I work at seeing what’s new.

Maybe the real trick to all this living is figuring out that getting what you really want is only a few steps away from settling for what you think you deserve?

It’s only a matter of turning a few degrees so that you can see what could be.

It’s just a few steps….

Man.

That sounds too easy.

It’s pretty easy, isn’t it?

I could do this. I don’t want to do this.

It’s really hard to find parts for a RHD Jeep.

That’s whining.

My steering gear is leaking like crazy….and I need to either repair or replace it.

I’m going to call a junkyard auto parts recycler tomorrow to see if I can buy another one cheap and have them ship it to me.

When I say “I could do this” it may be wishful thinking.

There’s a lot of parts inside one of these stupid steering gears.

Look at all the ball bearings!

Oh, I just remembered….I almost got bit by a dog on the route today!

That’s something to take my mind off of these car repairs I have to do!

Three chihuahuas (sp?) came running at me, biting my pants leg, when the screaming owner cried out from her trailer door, “LOOK OUT!! OH MY GAWWWWWWDDDDD!!! BEHIND YOU!!! HE’S A BULLDOG!!!” and, sure enough, the pitbull was closing fast on me.

That was when I leapt onto the hood of the Mail Jeep….and, then, when the dogs were distracted, I jumped into the driver’s seat and backed out of the hell that was 3 little dogs and one big mean dog.

Awwwww, who am I kidding?

They were all mean dogs.

Size doesn’t matter.

Man, I just want my car to run…..and I don’t want to get bitten by a dog.

Is that too much to ask?

Amos Lee and the Colorado Symphony!

It was warm and moist here today….and we had a burn pile in a new spot off of the new leach field and cleaned up the mess from when…. the new leach field was installed!

It’s still Winter here.

It’s going to get cold again.

I know it’s not time for this song….

But…it’s time for this song.

Live at Red Rocks!

Amos Lee!

Live at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony!

Warm weather….and a pre-Spring cleanup….and some early Amos Lee.

It does not get any better.

Cold air is coming again….after all, it’s still Winter.

Maybe this song is more appropriate?

glass treehouse

Here’s another great video from Kirsten Dirksen….this one about a team of Atlanta architects who built a glass treehouse in Georgia.

The description from YouTube:

When the financial crisis hit in 2008, architects Mary Clare DeReuil & Carlos Tardio were without work, but determined to continue creating buildings. “We were scouring the city all the time looking for cheap land, land that no one wanted to deal with because it was problematic,” explains DeReuil. They finally picked up property near downtown Atlanta that was “problematic” and “unbelievably cheap” because there was no driveway access.

Over the course of 4 years, the two architects (Tardio Architecture) worked 10 hour days to create an experimental glass dream home using materials easily accessible in industrialized settings: steel beams, cast concrete, 2 by 6 milled lumber and lots of recycled glass. “We scrapped this thing together with personal loans, brother and sister loans, loan sharks, credit cards, we just did whatever and made it happen.”

Not wanting to cut down any of the mature trees on the property, DeReuil and Tardio designed the home around the trees. As a result the structure floats among the huge hardwoods and has been nicknamed the “Atlanta treehouse”. Tardio prefers “House of Doors” since “the structural system was derived from an exploration of doors”. All the doors in the home are made of heavy sheets of glass with Tardio’s proprietary pivot system which allows even a child to open them with ease (we, the faircompanies family, took the home for a test drive and our then 3-year-old could open them easily).

Pretty cool.

Where there is a will….there must be a way.

quiet….errrrrr…

idler pulley

Replaced the idler pulley and put a new belt on the Mail Jeep this afternoon.

The Jeep had been sounding kind of weird….squealy….but, sort of a subtle squealiness….and, sure enough, it was the idler pulley.

Dry as a bone….hard to turn.

That’s not hard to understand why things would sound strange with a seized up idler pulley.

The first time I changed it out, about 5 years ago, the RHD part I needed was available only from the dealer….and was 56 dollars.

56 dollars for a little pulley….yikes.

This time, I was able to get it from my regular parts store…..and the part cost 12 dollars after the discount.

That was a better deal.

All these things that need fixing….and the hard part (for me) is often diagnosing the problem.

You know, though?

I’m getting a lot better at the diagnosing part the more problems I have.

What an education it is to have all these problems.
