real slow thriller

This is a YouTube video called “Underbid Tree Job” from a fellow named Reg Coates.

When you watch it, the low-key introduction will make you think that this is the most boring video you’ve ever seen.

That’s the nature of a man who is willing to be understated talking about doing something that’s really dangerous.

When a man isn’t squealing in fear he can make the terrifying seem mundane.

I’ve seen people take down trees before, and it always makes me hold my breath a little.

You don’t always know how things will go when you’re cutting down a tree.

Trees, especially one that’s this rotten, are unpredictable when you’re trying to take them down.

This guy’s a pro….and did a hard job well.

That’s thrilling, really.

No CGI, even.

A real….slow….thriller.

Here’s another video of the kind of stuff these guys do:

Low-key Brit builds nice van….in 7 days for 1000.00

I like this guy and I like his van…..good design from a low-key climber from the UK.

I’m more impressed with this van than I am with all the Sprinter vans that have been built up with outside labor.

Daddy’s money didn’t buy this van.

Mark is a Mechanical Engineer and his design and attention to detail reflects that.

I’ve watched a bunch of these van conversion videos….and this is one of the more realistic and attractive finished products that I’ve seen.

I don’t have anything that I need to escape.

I don’t want to run from anything.

There’s no need for that….my life is good in a beautiful place.

But….it sure would be fun to wake up to a different sunrise every once in a while.

There really is a lot to see in this world.

Video is by Nate Murphy.

Living the VanLife as Digital Nomads in a VW Westfalia (Utilitarian Vehicle)….another great Dylan Magaster video

Here’s another video from Dylan Magaster.

I like seeing how folks modify their vans for full-time van life.

This particular video talks a little about the business side of traveling and monetizing your adventure. That’s kind of important to figure out how to make some money.

This guy actually used the word “glamping”.

I guess that means upscale camping or something.

Glamping.

Who knew?

It’s Thanksgiving Day!

Man….I do have a lot to be thankful for!

I am thankful….that I know that I need to be brimming with gratitude.

Independence and No Authority

The title of this post is part of a quote from the documentary.

It’s what drew many of the young men who became “mountain men” in the 1800’s to that lifestyle.

The promise of “independence and no authority” is pretty darn appealing.

I could see where that would be a strong draw.

I wonder how many people jump into something just because they don’t want to be put down BY THE MAN?

What weird things do many of us do with the promise of independence and no authority in our future?

I don’t want to be eaten by a Griz…..but….

If I didn’t hear it…I’d miss it

We lived in New Jersey for a couple of years….and when we moved down South I couldn’t understand the way the folks down here talked.

Of course, I couldn’t understand those Yankees when we moved to New Jersey from California a couple of years before that, too.

It’s funny, though, how some people tease me about being a Yankee for having lived up there….way up there….up North.

You know?

Now, I’d miss it if I didn’t hear people talking like this.

It’s home now….to hear those words.

When someone asks me, “How you doin’ ?” I say, “I’m doin’ good. You?”

Someone from a different part of the world would correct me in their heads by thinking, “he must mean ‘well’. Surely, he meant to say, “I’m doing quite well, thankyou. How are you doing today?”

That’s just not the way to talk sometimes.

Good people talk all different ways…sometimes.

That’s what I’ve learned, I guess.

You’ve got to look behind the words to see the good folks.

You have to be with them where they are.

And…it’s nice if they’re willing to be with you where you are.

What the heck? We’re all in the same place.

That’s a good thing.

Two about Dick

OK….in the first video….that bear deterrent….little wires around your tent?

WT….Heck?

WTH?

I guess that feeling safer is a small part of being safe.

These two videos are about a man named Dick Proenneke.

If you don’t know who Dick Proenneke is….watch this video.

He was a competent man.

What an epitaph that would be, huh?

“He was a competent man”.

I don’t know what they’d put on my tombstone…..maybe “He really tried hard sometimes”?

Anything about Dick Proenneke is cool.

Dick Proenneke was no Harvey Weinstein.

He was cool.

The Warmest Village in Alaska

This is a video produced by an outfit out of Montana called WX TV  (Weatherization TV). It’s part of the program in weatherization offered by Montana State University.

You wouldn’t think that a video about insulation and weatherization would be interesting….but….it is pretty interesting.

This shows what life in an Indigenous Alaskan village is like better than most of the videos I’ve seen, too.

And who would you want to teach you about insulating something? A guy in a place that’s really cold? Or a guy in a place like Costa Rica?

I’d want to figure out how to stay warm if I wanted to learn about insulation….but….that’s just me.

This video is about a job in Alaska in a place called Goodnews Bay.

Brrrrrrrrrrr.

Good for you, Insulation Guys!

If we’re going to be spending tax dollars, I sure do love to see it going towards something good….like helping these folks make it through the winter.

Side-door container 2nd life as WA’s ski town outdoorsy home

I’ve never seen a container with side doors.

And….that brings up an interesting design option that the more common container doesn’t bring to mind: why not use the container as a protective shell….and build and insulate your house like you would if the container wasn’t surrounding it?

It’s kind of goofy….but it would be cool to be able to completely shutter and secure a small place that you would be away from while you traveled.

Some of these alternatives seem kind of expensive….even if you’re using something cheap like an old container.

It’s expensive to figure out how to retrofit a cheap base option to live in.

Still….a container with doors like these is pretty interesting.

I like to see all this creativity.

This is another great Kirsten Dirksen video.
