No Value to the Offering

“Rare double-lot opportunity in one of Asheville’s most sought-after corridors. Two parcels being sold together offer exceptional potential for the right buyer. The existing home is being sold as-is and holds no value to the offering.”

This is my friend Steve’s house.

Steve passed away a couple of months ago.

I worked with Steve at a camp in North Carolina for a bunch of years.

He was a great and important friend to me.

He was one of the true pioneers in the climbing community.

Now his house is for sale.

The listing says, “holds no value to the offering”…and…I guess that may be true if you didn’t know and love Steve.

But…I occasionally slept on that couch with the red blanket when I was working at camp.

And…if you could see to the left of where the trash can is in this picture…that’s where Steve hung his guitar and his dulcimer…and…the snakes were in a cage or holder…(what do you call a box for snakes?)….and the birds of prey were outside…and…that’s where all the life was.

I rode…and climbed…and camped with Steve…ate a bunch of Mexican food with Steve…laughed with Steve…shared friendships with Steve and made a lot of new ones because of Steve…even did some artwork for Steve.

That’s where the life was.

(I don’t think that they staged this picture much for the sale of the house.)

Steve wouldn’t have cared about that, anyway.

The house just covered him and his animals from the weather.

“No Value to the Offering…”

That’s a funny thing. We live in these houses…and the life that the house holds for a while is the value . When we are gone…someone may say about our house, “no value to the offering”…but…the people who know…well…they know.

This is my friend Steve’s house.

It’s a treasure.

And so was he.
