Putting the “A” in “STEAM”….the STEAM STUDIO at UNCA….Asheville, NC

Hah!

I just got it!

STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) becomes STEAM after you add an “A”….for ART.

This is one of my daughter’s buddies from school….one of the people that she worked with on the big sculpture that ended up in the middle of Times Square in NYC…..named Brent Skidmore.

I don’t know how I’ll ever get a tour of the STEAM studios up in the River Arts District again….I went with Zoe when she was working on the project….but, I’d like to see it sometime.

It’s a good place.

Here’s the description from the YouTube page:

UNC Asheville Ramsey Library Brown Bag Talk A lively conversation about the new STEAM studio at the River Arts Makers Place. Brent Skidmore, Professor of Art and Art History at UNC Asheville talks about the dreams in cross-disciplinary work and collaborations thus far in art and engineering and shows examples of the Creative Fabrication course taught as the STEAM studio came on line. Skidmore discusses the process of designing such a space, fundraising efforts and possible connections to an application in your life, studio, classroom or community where you can use some STEAM!

“Drinking from the firehose”!

Norway’s Only 3 Star Chef…

I’d heard about this guy….seasonal food and a Norwegian perspective from this native Danish chef.

Esben Holmboe Bang is the chef’s name.

Good stuff.

The presentation isn’t really my style….beautiful and small (emphasize the “small”)….but….it looks interesting.

Actually, “beautiful” is something we have at our house….frequently….but a stylized plate isn’t really a goal for the sake of style.

It’s just something that happens….when the good cook has an artistic flair.

Norway looks good.

I like Scandinavian people.

A Year on a Saskachewan Farm….Jason LeBlanc Farm

This is kind of cool!

And…what an appropriate soundtrack to a video of a bunch of farmers taking it to the fields!

When you buy a bag of vegetables or a loaf of bread, you can probably thank farmers like these.

Farming’s a tough way to make a living….but it looks like a good way to make a life.

car stuff….

This looks fun….sitting, eating pizza in a good shop, pondering the next step in an engine installation on an old Nova station wagon.

Car stuff is so boring if you’re not into cars…but…pretty fascinating if you want to figure out how to keep your ride rolling down the road.

I love cars…but don’t really have the time or money to screw around with engine swaps or hot rodding anything.

It’s a good skill to have.

And…wouldn’t it be great to have a shop with a lift!?

A shop with a concrete floor?

That would be an intense pleasure to work in a shop with the right accoutrements.

Edit. Edit. and…Edit.

Jenny was talking about “editing” today.

We were talking about lightening our load….moving….only filling our lives with the things that really matter to us.

This is about as pared down as you can get….a tiny house made of recycled material….set up for a yoga teacher to encourage movement through available/accessible space.

I wonder if I could edit to this point?

It would be good to not trip over all my crap.

I wonder if I could pare down?

A better question would be, “why not?”

Why not?

Light enough to travel….right?

I need to stop going to thrift stores so often.

I can always find something that convinces me that I need it…especially if it’s cheap.

You can’t pare down if you keep filling the bucket full of new water!

Rolling Creativity

This is what I need this type of home to be….colorful…creative…full of life.

This couple and their family have created a real home…out of the school bus that the man who made this home (with his wife) used to ride to school when he was a child.

That’s a beautiful circle.

I could see that this would be a good place to make a good life.

How hard would it be to do something like this?

I’m a “grownup”.

I should be able to figure out something good….right?
