scrollwork

My daughter is working on a school project that involves carving something like this.

It’s like this….only hundreds of times bigger….and hundreds of times heavier.

Maybe thousands of times.

It’s huge.

The artist who designed it came in today and reprimanded the “scroll team” for not being up to speed on making a perfect scroll.

Of course, he couldn’t do it….so he yelled at Zoe for not being able to achieve perfection with an angle grinder she just learned how to use.

Goofball.

Oh, well.

It’s a huge project….that’s going to be on display in Times Square in NYC…so I imagine there’s some tension as it comes down the home stretch.

A small scroll is hard.

Imagine making a scroll that’s huge.

That’s really hard.

She’s living in a high stakes world where art and technology fall in love with each other.

Love is hard.

“Not what most people would desire….but my needs are filled.”

Hah!

Here’s an Alaska homestead where fun is a high priority.

That’s a good way to live.

Now, of course, the old story about the ants and the grasshopper would teach us that you’re kind of screwed if you don’t spend your life storing up and getting ready for the long decline that comes with the older years ahead….but….this guy had a different plan.

I guess his plan was….not to plan.

What an interesting life.

Keep mooning the train!

the eye of the beholder

There is something beautiful about bringing a surprise “back from the dead”.

Now, of course, if you didn’t have any interest in cars, it would just be another chunk of moldy metal.

Why would anyone want to grease and clean and tune and get something like this running again?

Why would you want to do that?

BECAUSE IT’S A COOL OLD DODGE!!  THAT’S WHY!

There is artistry to something like this.

There is a real sensitivity that makes a car guy appreciate something like this.

Who ever thought that a mechanic could be a sensitive artist?

This is beautiful.

what do I have to lose?

I haven’t been driving the Mail Jeep for a while.

I had a bunch of problems that I couldn’t figure out….so I took it to an “expert”….and when I got it back after being charged for a second time of “not fixing the problem”….the engine had a loud ticking sound.

Who knows what it is?

I don’t.

Anyway, what do I have to lose?

I poured in some Marvel Mystery Oil and am going to give it a shot and see what happens.

What’s the worst that could happen?

I ruin an engine with 282,000 mail miles on it and have to get a new one?

I need to do that anyway, probably.

It’s had a lot of hard miles.

No matter what happens….I do really like the name of that product that I dumped into the engine.

Who could fault a product called “Marvel Mystery Oil”?

I’d use it after a bath….it sounds so darn mysterious.

the numbers

I don’t know if things are getting better.

When your Jeep starts running strange, sometimes it feels like the end of the world.

It’s not, though.

It’s just my misconceptions again.

Here’s a good Ted talk….positive.

It’s just the numbers, though.

Maybe the real problem is that when we watch the news, we’re fed a constant stream of negative information and images?

And….we have the choice of what media we pay attention to.

Some news outlets are even more negative than others.

What’s the media’s agenda if what we are shown is predominantly negative?

This speaker touches on news and its effect on us, too.

There’s positive information out there.

It’s good to hear some of it every once in a while.

not my adventure….but….a good one.

Kombi Life….on YouTube!

I’ve used some of their videos before….and this is another good one.

A trick is seeing the adventures that are all around us….but….seeing an Alaska adventure like this gives me itchy feet.

Man.

It is soooooo good to travel!

And….I want another VW bus at some point.

They’re a goofy choice for transportation….but….OH!!!!! I STILL THINK THAT THEY’RE PRETTY DARN COOL!!
