We went to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia for Mother’s Day on Sunday.

It was something that Jenny wanted to do….and, luckily, it was a kid friendly activity.

I’m kidding, of course.

Jenny wanted to do it because it was a kid friendly activity.

I think that she would have liked to linger in the garden area of the zoo a little more than we were able (we walked fast through that section)….but we had a nice time looking at the stuff the little guys wanted to look at.

It’s precarious….figuring out the stuff that the little guys can do before it all falls apart.

Nate drew this for school.

she said turn 001

It’s his take on the situation.

It’s a true story.

We missed our unmarked turn and Jenny was mad at me for not planning for the thing we couldn’t see.

That’s how I roll, though.

I never see it coming.

Especially when I can’t see it coming.

Anyway….we got directions and drove back a mile or two….and we were there…..at the zoo.

And, for Columbia, it was a pretty nice day.

I think that the temperature only got up to about 91°.

That’s nice for Columbia.

I think that we beat the heat.

The zoo was good….and I recovered from being a poor planner when it turned out to be close.

I wouldn’t have been redeemable if I’d kept driving like I’d planned to do.

When you’re lost, keep driving.

Stay the course.

Mother’s Day.

I’m glad I didn’t wait until Florida to ask for directions.

wiggling teeth

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The tooth fairy has come to our house a couple of times in the last month or so.

That’s the advantage of having younger children again.

They lose baby teeth….and the tooth fairy comes to visit them when they’re sleeping.

I’m getting older….and the tooth fairy doesn’t visit me anymore.

At least, I don’t think that the tooth fairy ever comes to visit me.

What do I know about what happens when I’m asleep?

Anyway, I don’t think that the tooth fairy could bring me enough money to take the sting out of losing a tooth.

Losing a grownup tooth is a bigger deal than losing a baby tooth….but we don’t seem to celebrate losing grownup teeth like we do the teeth that the little guys lose.

We don’t celebrate a lot of things that happen to us when we get older.

That’s weird.

Anyway…so….Nate gets a visit from the tooth fairy in the night, she gives him money for his tooth, and he’s getting rich.

Easy.

Probably the easiest financial transaction he’ll ever have the opportunity to make.

If it wasn’t a finite supply in his mouth, and if the losing wasn’t the end of the process, he really could get rich.

He could be a tooth tycoon if he worked out the right deal with the fairy.

That’s kind of a long winded preamble to the end of the story, though.

I looked over the other day and he had his fingers on the teeth and was checking each one for play.

“What are you doing?!!”

Of course, the answer was “nothing”…..it usually is when confronted like that.

Hands in the cookie jar, hands on a tooth, the answer would always be “nothing”.

“Nothing” covers a lot of ground.

I know what he’s doing, though.

He’s planning.

He’s wiggling his teeth and planning for his future.

This tooth stuff could be “seed money” if he plays his cards right.

What a deal.

Who can blame him, though?

I do my own version….checking things out, seeing what I’m willing to lose forever in return for enough of the filthy, filthy lucre.

Enough.

Let the teeth be….the fairy will still be around if they stay in your mouth for a while, Nate.

Don’t be in such a hurry…..no matter how profitable it is.

waking up…again.

James_Goodwyn_Clonney_-_Waking_Up

Listening to the new Sturgill Simpson album on Spotify…..so good.

Drinking coffee.

And that’s like so many mornings….listening to something with my headphones on while the house is quiet….a day off starting slow and alone….waiting for everybody to wake up.

I take a lot for granted.

Like….waking up.

There’s no day that’s average….no day that doesn’t hold the potential for something amazing to happen.

That’s not hype, either.

That’s not just the coffee talking.

Maybe some days are a lesson in perspective.

Maybe you have to really be awake to see the amazing?

It’s the potential that flows underneath the surface of the everyday that I’m missing sometimes.

There’s a website called “our open road” that I look at every once in a while.

It’s about a family travelling through South America in a Westphalia van.

It’s a big adventure that started with….starting.

They aren’t travel geniuses.

They aren’t mobility savants.

They just started out….and kept going.

(How boring is a blog where the guy only writes about the things that he wants to do? How boring is that? A person should report the ACTION….not the DESIRE. That’s more interesting….)

Report the action?

Well….I need to fix the pull cord on the lawnmower.

ACTION PACKED!!! THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!!

Awwww. Who am I kidding? Sparrow’s up and on my lap all of a sudden…..the headphones are off….it’s 6:01 AM and the day has begun….officially.

That’s my adventure….whether we’re rolling down some back road in Chile in an old van, or fixing the lawnmower and cutting the grass….where my family is….is where the adventure is.

You wake up to adventure everyday….no matter how familiar it feels.

Waking up is where it all begins.

I’m awake.

Jim

Jim Harrison died in March and, until I read a eulogy by Rick Bass in Men’s Journal, I hadn’t heard that it had happened.

He was in poor health….and his wife of 5 decades had died the previous autumn….and he had a number of health issues….gout, depression…spinal surgery….and, as Rick Bass wrote, “lately he had been wearing down.”

He died at his writing desk…working on a poem.

This guy was a great writer….one of my favorites.

He’s best known for writing the novella that the movie “Legends of the Fall” was based on……but he wrote a large number of books and collections of poetry and novellas.

He was prolific.

You remember Legends of the Fall?

That was a pretty good movie.

Like I said, though….this guy was a great writer.

Somehow, I hear about everything that the Kardashians do….why didn’t I hear that Jim Harrison had died?

Check out his books if you’ve never read any Jim Harrison….maybe start with “Legends of the Fall” because it’s familiar….or an older one called “Farmer”….or maybe “Dalva”.

He’s worth knowing about.

Jim Harrison…..born December 11 , 1937.  Died March 26, 2016.

December 11, 1937 – March 26, 2016.

He lived a big life in that “dash between”.

A PS….found this after posting the blog….

St. Maries, ID

Two posts in one day?

Why not?

Here’s a video about a place in Idaho that’s close to some property we own.

Why am I watching videos about wilderness when there’s……?

How about that bike trail?

It’s important to “bloom where you’re planted”…..but, man….the world is a big place. There’s lots to see.

Here’s another “northern Idaho” video….this one about Wallace, ID….

Check out the Hiawatha Bike Trail in this video.

Man.

country living

Ah.

I looked up “wilderness”….I looked up “wilderness living”…..I drank some coffee…..then I looked up “real life” just for fun….found a SpongeBob video…..then I looked up “country living” and found this live version of the Stylistics singing a song called …”country living”.

That’s what YouTube is great for….wasting time while everyone is asleep.

I got up early with visions of doing something minimally productive….but ended up wasting time because I was too sleepy to do anything that mattered.

Funny how that goes.

Sometimes, you can’t drink enough coffee to jump over that log of sleepy aimlessness.

Oh….good grief.

Check this one out…..weird.

Sparrow Going Down

little mermaid

We went to a race that my youngest son’s school sponsored the other day, and at the end of the race, a lot of the kids went down to the lake to play.

Our two-year-old was pretty excited to get to go down with them and play on the “beach”, so we put her swimsuit on her and I followed her to the water.

From 5 feet behind her, I could tell that it was going to be a problem when she didn’t stop when she got to the edge but kept walking…..farther out than I’d hoped.

She was too excited to stop, though….even though I was yelling to her that it looked deeper than we thought it was.

The beach wasn’t as gradual a slope as she and I must have both expected ….because when she was about 5 feet from the shore, it dropped off pretty dramatically.

I watched her tip….and then start to sink.

I ran in and pulled her out. She was surprised and a little scared, but not sputtering.

She must have held her breath because she wasn’t sputtering.

That’s a weird feeling to be reaching for my slippery baby, grabbing at a leg and missing, then grabbing her arm and pulling her out.

She turned over as she was sinking, and the look on her face was, again, more surprise and confusion than fear.

Wide-eyed and underwater.

That’s not a look that I hope to ever see again.

Going down….surprised and a little bit scared.

Fearlessness that’s based on inexperience can get you into trouble.

theology

jesus-shroud-660I know less about theology than I did when I was younger.

Theology was a good head game back then.

Theology was a distraction.

It was easier to get caught up in the structure than to simply understand and accept the gift of Christ.

I was tormented by the meaning behind the phrase “in the world, not of the world”.

How could I be good enough to escape being “in the world”?

I didn’t understand a lot…and I still don’t.

I believe in a simple Gospel.

I believe that I am loved by God…even when I am not loved by the people around me.

I believe that real love is a simple thing….and forgiving of my faults.

I believe that God’s love is different from what we consider love….or understand to be love.

I believe that there is a consistency to God’s love that the people around me can’t approach.

I need to cut the people around me some slack….they aren’t God. They can’t love the way He can.

That’s simple.

Simple….why can’t we settle on a simple understanding of the Gospel….and relax in the faith that we are loved?

It’s kind of funny….we can only relax in the trust that God loves us when we can relax in the knowledge that, in spite of all our shortcomings and human frailty, we are worthy of love.

Worthy….not because of who we are and what we know and have accomplished…but because of His grace.

We don’t earn His love.

There is no pecking order in our attempts to love God.

Maybe that’s why the phrase “the least of these” is so appealing and powerful.

Theology is a funny thing.

It greases the wheels of structure.

It keeps the earthly and intellectual satisfied.

It lets us build our own Tower of Babel in our minds.

God reaches down to us.

I can’t jump high enough to reach God.

Still, I reach for something I hope to understand.

I reach….even if I have already been touched.

It’s so simple….why can’t I rest in that knowledge?
