We have a rear wheel bearing on the Caravan that makes it sounds like we need to get some more speed up before we leave the runway.
It’s loud….and it’s unpleasant.
So…tomorrow, I’m going to replace it with a brand new bearing assembly.
If you watch enough videos on YouTube, you can figure out how to do the job.
Or….you figure out how horrible the job is going to be.
People post solutions to the “worst case scenario”….and I watch all the bad situations.
That’s how I learn that the situation is worse than I ever knew to think.
Maybe mine won’t be so bad?
Maybe, after 265,000 plus miles through all sorts of road conditions and salty water, mine won’t be so rusted that it’s a struggle to get the old one out?
That would be pretty cool.
Improbable….but cool.
It’s funny how knowledge of what might happen can scare you.
What if we went into every new experience with a positive expectation?
Maybe that would last 5 minutes into a confusing repair job that was quickly going south?
(“Going South”? My Southern friends would love that one. That’s worse than “Peter’d out”.)
I’ll do this and won’t make my own video.
It’s hard enough to do without a camera in my hands, too.
Here’s a Dad making shoes with his daughter.
“With”….that’s an important part.
I do stuff “for” our children…but doing it all “with” them would be a better way to go.
Shoes out of tires is pretty cool.
We’ll have to try that sometime soon.
This is the first Noah Gundersen song I ever heard.
What a great introduction.
“I’ve got a lot of loose ends…I’ve done some damage…”
What a great song.
“Here, I stand on the edge of the ledges I’ve made….looking for a steady hand…”
Really good songwriting can be so enriching.
Any good art can be enriching.
Let’s all make some good art!
Let’s get enriched!
Yeah, boy!!
Artists!!
Living in a truck!!
Now, we need a bus….or something big….to get all the guys comfortable and warm.
Little guys have different needs than big people.
Or…do they?
We’ve gone across the country in our Dodge Grand Caravan a couple of times….and people ask how we can do that with little kids and 4 “grown ups”….and it is kind of amazing that the little guys do it as well as they do.
So…maybe we don’t need a giant vehicle.
Check out these guy’s comments about minimalism giving them the freedom to do this.
It’s true.
I’m the rich guy fearing the eye of a needle, though.
A poor guy with too much stuff.
A rich guy who doesn’t know how to edit.
This is cool.
If you don’t have a lot of stuff that demands more stuff to take care of it all, you could probably do this.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Isaac’s Metro may have broken a timing belt.
Or….it might have a dead fuel pump.
Or….it might have both.
It konked out on the way home from a trip to town….and most of my family had to walk a couple of miles to make it the rest of the way.
When I got home from work, we towed the Metro to the house….but I haven’t had a chance to look at it.
It would be a great thing to put a belt kit on it and have it back on the road again.
That’s not what everyone says is going to be the case with that engine.
Most people say the engine is going to be toast after you break a belt and the valves hit the pistons.
I like this video the best.
It’s a more positive proposition to believe that things are going to be all right.
And…it’s good to see somebody tearing into a repair.
When you do it a lot, you don’t need to be tentative.
That sounds good, too.
When the car starts and runs like it’s supposed to, the mechanic in the video says, “WE WIN!”
I hope that I get a chance to say that.
We’ll see.
Here’s a short film from the Say Mahalo Collective.
I don’t know if our big dog would be so accommodating.
I think that somehow I’d be in the dirt or off the bike and yelling for him to COME BACK.
This dog is a good trail buddy.
Awwwwwww.
I wonder how she’s doing?
Jenny and I are going backpacking soon.
Winter backpacking.
Hmmmmmm.
Hopefully, it will be milder weather than what this guy is experiencing.
Like him, though, when we go to sleep I think I’ll say to Jenny, “goodnight….and….maybe….see you tomorrow…”
That’s the way hardcore people sign off for the evening.
Maybe.
Of course, it will have more impact if I use my best “Arnold” impression.
This guy is pretty good….making it in a cold Swiss environment.
Making it with minimal gear.
Cool.
Errrrrr…..cold?
